It’s Only Season 2—The Best Is Still Ahead!
Sometimes a creative twist can shift the way we see life.
Last week, at a concert with my daughter, I heard a song for the first time that immediately made me pause and think. It was Season 2 of Friends by MaRynn Taylor, and the concept stuck with me.
The song reflects on how we often feel like we should have life figured out—whether it’s our careers, relationships, or purpose. But in reality, we’re only in Season 2 of a much longer story. There’s still so much ahead that we can’t see yet.
For those unfamiliar, Friends was one of the most iconic TV shows of all time, following a group of 20-somethings navigating life in New York City. The show ran for 10 seasons, meaning by Season 2, the characters were just getting started—figuring things out, making mistakes, and evolving.
It’s a great metaphor for life and leadership. Too often, we put pressure on ourselves to have all the answers right now. But what if we looked at things differently?
What if Your Career Is Still in Season 2?
For ambitious professionals, success can feel like both an achievement and a trap. By the time you hit your 40s, you may have checked a lot of boxes—promotions, leadership roles, financial security. But at some point, a new pressure sets in: Am I where I’m supposed to be? Is this it?
But what if you reframed it?
What if, instead of seeing yourself as being at the tail end of your journey, you saw yourself as still in the early seasons? What if this was just the setup for your most impactful years ahead?
Maybe you’re leading a company, but your greatest innovation or legacy is still ahead.
Maybe you’re at the top of your industry, but your biggest personal fulfillment is still to come.
Maybe you’ve built success, but your true calling is just starting to take shape.
The Power of a Multi-Season Mindset
When you view your career and leadership like a long-running series, it shifts your perspective:
You Stop Rushing There’s no need to have everything figured out today. Growth, reinvention, and even setbacks are just part of the longer narrative.
You Make Bolder Moves If this is only Season 2, why not take a risk? Why not explore a new business venture, start mentoring, or pivot to something more meaningful?
You Redefine Success If you’re not at the end of your story, then the pressure to have arrived disappears. It’s about evolving, not finishing.
What’s Coming in Your Season 3, 4, and Beyond?
Think about a time when you felt completely lost—maybe in your 20s or early 30s. You probably look back now and realize those struggles were setting you up for something greater. The same applies today. Ten years from now, you’ll look back at this stage with new clarity.
So instead of worrying about where you “should” be, ask yourself:
If this is only Season 2, what’s still possible for me?
What’s a bold move I’d make if I wasn’t treating my career like a short story?
How can I embrace what’s ahead instead of feeling stuck in what’s behind?
Your story is still being written. The best seasons are yet to come.
