Dream Big! (no…BIGGER!)
Last quarter, I focused my newsletter on Transitions. Over the next quarter, I will focus on Taking Control of Your Career.
Too many executives I met with have put their careers on auto-pilot, often unconsciously reducing the chances they will meet their professional and personal goals. Some have even lost their jobs as a result of defaulting to others to determine their career direction. I want to encourage you to be proactive and intentional with your career. And if there are any specific topics you would like me to cover, please reach out. I always value your input and feedback.
We all focus on doing more, but to what end? Too many clients I speak to have short-term or moderately sized goals in-mind. As we dig into these, we find that for multiple reasons, they hold themselves back, setting goals that may appear ‘realistic’, but they are making sacrifices to what they truly want prematurely.
My clients and I have fun when we push the envelope in tearing down the artificial barriers and they come up with huge goals. By dreaming about a life where you have everything you want, you reset your life and career vision to become more meaningful. You can take perspective of what’s most important and create a plan to realize those dreams.
Perhaps my favorite part of these sessions is helping clients see that fulfilling one goal does not always mean sacrificing another. In fact, quite often we find that strengthening themselves in one area of life provides them with skills and energy to apply such lessons to other areas of life.
Consider when asked as a child, ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’, what did you say? While your answer may not have been realistic, it was unfiltered and authentic. It’s time to do the same, though through a different lens.
The new question I pose to you is, ‘what will you be most proud to have accomplished over the next 20+ years, when looking back on your life in 40 years?’.
I genuinely want to hear your answers. Please take some time to reflect and really push yourself to dream big and establish some wild goals. Have fun with the process!
