Role Models that Inspire
I wish you could have been a fly on the wall during a session I had last week.
A client shared a touching story about his father (who since passed away), a selfless pediatrician who would stop at nothing to help patients, even during his days off. The admiration in my client’s eyes as he relived that memory was palpable.
Fast forward to a later point in our conversation when we explored what would make his career more meaningful. As he described his ambitions, it became clear that he was already emulating the very qualities he admired in his father. When I pointed out these similarities, his energy soared. It was a powerful moment – a reminder of all he had already accomplished and a spark of inspiration to propel him forward.
The Role Models Around Us
We often think of role models as historical figures or celebrities—people whose lives and achievements seem almost out of reach. But the truth is, the most impactful role models are often much closer to home. They are the parents, teachers, mentors, or friends who quietly lead by example, demonstrating values and behaviors we aspire to adopt.
Emulating Those Who Inspire Us
When we recognize these everyday role models, we tap into a source of inspiration that is both personal and powerful. These individuals have already walked the path we wish to follow, and their experiences can offer invaluable lessons. By emulating their qualities—whether it's selflessness, perseverance, integrity, or kindness—we can shape our own journey in meaningful ways.
Identifying Your Role Models
Think about the people who have influenced you the most. What qualities do they embody that resonate with you? How have they handled challenges, and what can you learn from their approach? By reflecting on these questions, you can begin to consciously integrate those qualities into your own life and career.
For me, I get my inspiration from the selflessness of my mother, the intelligence & authenticity of my maternal grandmother, the strength & sensitivity of my paternal grandfather, and the resilience from my paternal grandparents. To that end, it’s often a culmination of values from different role models that will help create the ‘best you’.
Inspiration in Action
Consider how you can bring these qualities into your daily routine. Maybe it's about showing more empathy in your interactions, like the pediatrician who always put his patients first. Or perhaps it's about staying committed to your goals, even when the going gets tough. Whatever it is, take that inspiration and put it into action.
Paying It Forward
Finally, remember that you, too, are a role model for others. Just as you have been inspired, you have the power to inspire those around you. By living out the qualities you admire in others, you create a ripple effect, influencing your colleagues, family, and friends in ways you might not even realize.
If you are so fortunate to have your role models alive and present in your life, take the opportunity to let them know how important of an impact they have had in shaping who you are. I will start…
Mom, thank you for being such an amazing inspiration to me!
