The Outer Banks of Tranquility
I’m writing this from the Outer Banks, NC, where I’m currently on vacation with my family. As a coach specializing in energy management for leaders, I understand the importance of recharging and avoiding burnout, which affects nearly 90% of workers in the US. It's essential to practice what I preach.
Instead of working non-stop until our annual family trip, I eased into the vacation, creating a plan for my return. This approach eased my mind and allowed me to focus better. Though my vacation is only a week, I used the week before to transition into it and will use the week after to transition out of it.
What are you doing to relax and recharge this summer? How will you be intentional about slowing down and recharging?
Here are some highlights from my trip and the lessons I learned after reflecting on many of the activities.
Embracing Carefree Moments
Watching my dog Luna chase birds at sunrise reminded me to be carefree and live in the moment. Similarly, seeing my kids boogie board with joy and laughter brought home the importance of having fun and enjoying life’s simple pleasures.
Finding Peace and Perspective
Gazing at the calm ocean and the vast, starry sky provided perspective and a sense of peace. These moments away from the daily hustle helped me see the bigger picture and find tranquility.
Building Connections and Bonds
Family game nights filled with laughter, and playing wallyball (a mix of volleyball and racquetball) against other families, underscored the value of support, bonding, and healthy competition. These activities highlighted the importance of nurturing relationships and creating strong connections.
Energizing Through Solitude
Morning bike rides alone gave me the energy to start my day strong and build my spirit. These solitary moments of self-care were essential in recharging my mental and physical batteries.
Savoring Simple Pleasures
Reading a book on the beach allowed my mind to relax and wander, while indulging in Duck Donuts served as a delightful reminder that occasional treats are necessary for happiness. Make time not just for the treats in life, but to slowly cherish each bite (whether literal or figurative).
Reflecting and Contemplating
The long car ride, with its quiet moments, provided ample time for reflection and contemplation. Sometimes, simply doing nothing and letting thoughts flow can be incredibly recharging. Even just listening to the cacophony of snoring family members in the car brought a smile to my face.
I want to thank my clients who have shown me the impact of easing into and out of vacations. Your actions have inspired me to do the same, proving that this approach truly helps in recharging and thriving.
Let’s continue to build a healthier, more fulfilling professional life together. Remember, taking the time to recharge is not a luxury but a necessity.
